@Medical Mind Thanks for your questions. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to verify answers for this form yet. They are in the works, and I'll have explanations for them soon. In regards to your two specific questions:

    33. 33. 54yo M has aneurysm in the distal portion of his abdominal aorta. Cross-sectional area is 2cm^2 and mean velocity of blood flow is 20 cm/sec. Which is the flow rate (L/min)?
Flow rate is = Volume/Time. So, we need to calculate the volume.

    2cm^2 x 20 cm/sec = 40cm^3/sec. But they want L/min. So, divide 1000 (1cm^3 = 0.001 L), and multiply by (60 sec/1min), and you'll get 2.4 L/min

    11. Please make sure to review specificity and sensitivity. Low specificity means a positive test doesn't do a good job of ruling a disease IN. Low sensitivity means a negative test doesn't do a good job of ruling a disease OUT. A stool blood test must have a lower specificity than sensitivity, because if the test is positive, blood can be coming from anywhere in the GI tract. In contrast, if test is negative, you can be more confident that the patient does NOT have a lower GI bleed.

Let me know if this makes sense! Good luck!

Low sensitivity is the correct answer.

@Herceptin can you explain why you think that's the answer? Also, did you get the question on your extended feedback?

I got the question correct so it didn't show up on my expanded feedback as incorrect. In retrospect, I simply thought about it like this,

"If I wanted to screen a patient for cancer, I would rather use a highly sensitive test."

Sensitivity: probability of detecting a disease when it's present, used to screen and rule out.
